Negotiations between the New York Yankees and outfielder Cody Bellinger have hit a standstill, according to insider sources at ESPN. The Yankees had their sights set on re-signing Bellinger after a successful season, but are now bracing themselves for the likelihood that he will be signing with another team instead. As a result, they are exploring new options to strengthen their lineup.
Reports indicate that the Yankees presented Bellinger with a five-year contract proposal that would pay him at least $30 million annually. This figure is in line with the lucrative deals that other top hitters have secured this offseason. For instance, Pete Alonso recently inked a five-year, $155 million agreement with the Baltimore Orioles, while Kyle Schwarber returned to the Philadelphia Phillies with a five-year contract worth $150 million. However, Bellinger, who is represented by prominent agent Scott Boras, is looking for a contract that exceeds five years and offers a higher average annual salary than the one currently on the table.
Last season, Bellinger’s performance was impressive; he boasted a batting average of .272 with 29 home runs, coupled with a .334 on-base percentage and a .480 slugging percentage. Yankees' manager Aaron Boone praised Bellinger’s defensive skills, athleticism, and adaptability. Remarkably, Bellinger communicated his willingness to play any position when he joined the team, ultimately showcasing his versatility by playing 85 games in left field, 41 in center, and 52 in right field. He is also capable of delivering strong defensive performances at first base if needed.
At 30 years old, Bellinger, a left-handed hitter, thrived in the confines of Yankee Stadium, hitting 18 of his 29 home runs there and achieving an OPS of .909, which is nearly 200 points higher than his performance on the road. He seemed to embrace the intense atmosphere of New York, a place where his father once played professional baseball. Throughout his career, Cody has been part of high-profile teams in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.
However, unless there is a significant change in the ongoing negotiations, it appears that Bellinger's stint with the Yankees may be coming to an end, prompting the team to consider alternative options to enhance their roster. Notably, the Yankees are still actively pursuing other potential targets such as outfielder Kyle Tucker and infielder Bo Bichette, and they are also engaging in discussions with other teams regarding possible trades.
