The Fearless Fighter: Paul Gallen's Unstoppable Journey
Paul Gallen, a true legend in his own right, almost took on the mighty Brock Lesnar, the WWE megastar and former UFC heavyweight champion, at the pinnacle of his career. But here's where it gets controversial: Gallen's promoter, George Rose, believes he could have even fought the notorious Jake Paul if their paths had crossed at the right time.
As Nelson Asofa-Solomona prepares for his highly anticipated Australian heavyweight debut in Brisbane, we uncover the secrets behind Gallen's fearless nature and his potential future showdowns.
Only weeks after leaving his lucrative deal with Melbourne Storm, Asofa-Solomona is set to embark on a new chapter as a professional fighter. With Australia's top promoter, No Limit, still eager for a clash between these two heavyweights, the stage is set for an epic battle.
Before we dive into the main event, let's talk about the undercard. The highly anticipated grudge match between Michael Zerafa and Nikita Tszyu will be preceded by a fight between NRL veterans Jeremy Latimore and Nelson Asofa-Solomona. With Asofa-Solomona heavily favored, the question arises: could he be the one to lure Gallen out of retirement for one last lucrative showdown?
Gallen, now 44 and twice retired from boxing, recently defeated Sonny Bill Williams, a victory that capped off an impressive career filled with massive fights. Speaking to Fox Sports Australia, Rose revealed the behind-the-scenes negotiations for a blockbuster fight against Lesnar, a true icon in the world of combat sports.
Lesnar, one of the most recognized athletes globally, fought eight times in the UFC, winning the heavyweight title in 2008 against Randy Couture. He then successfully defended his title against Frank Mir and Shane Carwin.
But here's the part most people miss: Gallen's fearless attitude and willingness to take on any challenge. Rose recalls how, after Gallen's shocking victory over Mark Hunt, another UFC heavyweight favorite, the question on everyone's lips was, "Who can't he beat?"
"At least in the crossover space," Rose adds.
And this is where the story gets even more intriguing.
"We were actually eyeing a fight between him and Brock Lesnar," Rose revealed. "Lesnar was coming down here with the WWE, so we had some talks. We were trying to see how we could work his visit in with a fight."
Gallen, always ready for a challenge, was on board. "He always said yes. Pay me, I'll fight him," Rose explained. "The guy literally feared no one."
But unfortunately, the timing with Lesnar didn't work out, and the fight never materialized.
Rose also believes that if Gallen were at the peak of his fighting career, he could have secured him a bout with Jake Paul, the American YouTuber-turned-boxer.
"Jake gives them all a run for their money," Rose said. "And Gal, he was exactly the same. He would've done well against Jake."
As for Friday night's showdown, Gallen will be firmly supporting his friend Jeremy Latimore, with whom he played for the Cronulla Sharks in 2017. Latimore revealed that he even sparred with Gal last year, and was impressed by his power and technique.
"A guy like Gal generates so much interest," Latimore said. "It's the same now with big Nelson. These guys with big profiles getting in there and having a crack at this tough sport - it captures people's attention."
So, will we see Gallen step back into the ring for one last hurrah? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: Paul Gallen's fearless nature and willingness to take on any challenge have made him a true icon in the world of combat sports.
