In October, Brewer received a bill for a whopping $930.37, covering usage for two months. He's not alone; other residents have reported similar spikes in their water bills, with some seeing their usage double or even triple over a few months.
The city has acknowledged the issue, attributing it to errors during the migration of previous account data into their new billing system. They've waived late fees and promised to review all accounts, but for residents like Brewer, it's not enough. He wants proof that the meter readings are accurate and believes the city should be taking more proactive measures to address the problem.
And this is the part most people miss... The new meter system is designed to provide more accurate readings than the old system, which estimated water usage based on bills. This means that some residents who were used to paying a certain amount might now be facing 'sticker shock' as their bills reflect their actual water usage. Mayor Byron H. Nolen explained it during a City Council meeting, but the reality is that many residents are struggling to understand and accept the sudden increase in their water bills.
In addition to the billing issues, Inkster residents also have to contend with higher water and sewage rates compared to neighboring cities. The city has implemented steady annual rate increases since 2015, and in 2025, the Great Lakes Water Authority approved the largest system-wide service charge increase in over a decade, further impacting Inkster's water rates.
To make matters worse, lead has been detected in Inkster's drinking water, particularly in older homes with lead service lines. The city is working to replace these lines with copper ones and is providing public education on lead contamination. However, for residents like Brewer, the concern over lead contamination adds another layer of complexity to an already frustrating situation.
