A Nightmare Stage for Dakar Rally Veteran: Sebastien Loeb's Struggle
A frustrating day for the legendary Sebastien Loeb as he faced an almost impossible task in the third stage of the 2026 Dakar Rally. Loeb, a former WRC star, found himself in a challenging situation, driving at a mere 20% of his Dacia's potential after losing over 25 minutes.
After a solid performance in the second test, Loeb was sitting comfortably in seventh place, just minutes behind the leader, Seth Quintero. However, the 421km Stage 3 turned into a nightmare, and Loeb's hopes of a Dakar win took a serious hit.
But here's where it gets controversial... Loeb's issues weren't unique. Several frontrunners, including Loeb, struggled to even finish the stage due to the abrasive terrain of Al-Ula in Saudi Arabia. Loeb suffered two separate punctures early on, leaving him limping to the finish line in 25th place, a massive 25 minutes behind Ford's stage winner, Mitch Guthrie.
This result dealt a severe blow to Loeb's ambitions, dropping him to 12th in the standings, over 16 minutes behind the new overall leader, Guthrie. Loeb insisted he took all precautions, but still found himself almost at a standstill once his spare wheels were gone.
"It was incredibly difficult," Loeb lamented. "The stage just wasn't suited to our cars. We had to drive at a fraction of the car's potential to avoid punctures, yet they still happened.
And this is the part most people miss... Loeb's frustration was palpable. He had already avoided punctures the previous day, but on Stage 3, it was a different story. Starting with caution, he still encountered punctures, highlighting the unpredictability of the terrain. With no spare wheels left and 300km to go, Loeb had no choice but to drive at a snail's pace, a far cry from his usual racing prowess.
"Nasser Al-Attiyah also lost time, but I think my situation was worse. Seeing cars finish with punctured tyres was a testament to how tough it was. I'm just glad we made it," Loeb added.
Meanwhile, five-time Dakar winner Al-Attiyah had a bruising day in his Dacia Sandrider, dropping from first to 10th after finishing Stage 3 in 19th place, just ahead of Loeb. Al-Attiyah now faces an 11-minute deficit in the general classification, with 10 stages remaining in this edition of Dakar.
Interestingly, Al-Attiyah seemed less frustrated, seeing the result as a strategic advantage for the marathon stage the next day. "Today was a good run, except for the last 100km where we had two punctures. We decided to survive and reach the finish. I'm happy with our position for tomorrow's stage, it will be a tough one for everyone," he explained.
With Dacia's star duo facing setbacks, reigning World Rally-Raid Champion Lucas Moraes led the way for the Renault Group brand, finishing in fourth. Former Extreme E champion Cristina Gutierrez followed closely in fifth.
Moraes now holds the highest position for Dacia in the overall standings, sitting in sixth place ahead of Gutierrez.
