California is currently grappling with the aftermath of a powerful storm system, which has unleashed fierce winds, heavy rain, and significant snowfall throughout the state this week. While conditions are expected to improve by Friday, there's still an ongoing risk of dangerous high surf along the coastline, flash flooding in areas near Los Angeles, and potential avalanches in the Sierra Nevada region.
On Friday, waves near the San Francisco Bay Area were predicted to soar as high as 25 feet (7.6 meters). In Southern California, certain regions were under alert for flooding, and officials warned of possible avalanches impacting the Lake Tahoe area. Residents of the mountain community of Wrightwood, situated approximately 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles, were advised to prepare for evacuation due to the threat of mudslides.
This severe weather event was fueled by atmospheric rivers—massive streams of moisture originating from tropical regions—coinciding with one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. Tragically, these storms have been linked to at least two fatalities earlier in the week.
According to the National Weather Service, downtown Los Angeles experienced its wettest Christmas season in 54 years due to these relentless rains.
In Wrightwood, the roads became impassable, strewn with rocks, debris, and thick mud by Thursday. With power outages affecting the area, a local gas station and coffee shop that was operating on generators became essential gathering spots for both residents and visitors.
“It’s really a crazy Christmas,” remarked Jill Jenkins, who was celebrating the holiday with her 13-year-old grandson, Hunter Lopiccolo.
Lopiccolo shared that there was a moment when their family considered evacuating after water eroded a section of their backyard. Ultimately, they chose to stay and managed to celebrate anyway. He received a new snowboard and e-bike for Christmas. "We just played card games all night with candles and flashlights," he recounted.
In another part of town, Davey Schneider undertook a mile-and-a-half trek through knee-deep floodwaters from his home to rescue cats from his grandfather’s house. "I wanted to help them out because I wasn’t confident that they were going to live," Schneider stated. Fortunately, all the cats survived, though they were understandably shaken.
Arlene Corte also noted that while roads had transformed into flowing rivers, her own home remained intact. "It could be a whole lot worse," she reflected. "We’re here talking."
With additional rain anticipated, over 150 firefighters have been deployed to the area, according to San Bernardino County Fire spokesperson Shawn Millerick, who emphasized, "We’re ready. It’s all hands on deck at this point."
Sadly, the severe weather claimed the life of a man in San Diego when a tree fell on him Wednesday, and further north, a sheriff’s deputy in Sacramento died in what appeared to be a weather-related vehicle accident.
Coastal areas, including Malibu, were placed under a flood watch until Friday afternoon, with wind and flood advisories issued for much of the Sacramento Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. Typically, Southern California experiences between half an inch to an inch (1.3 to 2.5 centimeters) of rain during this time of year; however, this week, many areas are projected to receive between 4 and 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters), with even higher totals expected in the mountainous regions, according to meteorologist Mike Wofford from the National Weather Service.
The Sierra Nevada mountains can expect more wind and heavy snowfall, with gusts creating perilous near white-out conditions that make travel through mountain passes extremely hazardous.
In response to the unfolding crisis, Governor Gavin Newsom declared states of emergency in six counties, enabling state resources and assistance. The state mobilized various resources and first responders to several coastal and Southern California regions, and the California National Guard remained on standby.
