A critical infrastructure failure has left a community in Brisbane's east reeling, with schools and homes facing a water crisis and a major road in disarray.
The incident began with a burst water main on Wynnum Road in Tingalpa, causing a flood that brought traffic to a complete halt. By the time the water was shut off, an enormous hole had been revealed, exposing the extent of the damage.
The impact was widespread, with around 45 properties left without water on Tuesday morning. Tingalpa State School, in a message to parents, anticipated a prolonged water outage, prompting the setup of portable toilets in the school car park and a request for children to stay home if possible.

Brenda O'Reilly, a receptionist at the Tingalpa Family Health Centre, described the chaos on Monday, with traffic continuing to drive through the flooded road before diversions were implemented. She noted that water was still gushing when she left work, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Adrian Murray, a Tingalpa resident, experienced the water flooding his driveway on Monday afternoon. His water supply was cut off on Tuesday, leaving him with no clear timeline for restoration.
"No-one’s spoken to us," he said, expressing frustration at the lack of communication.
Mr Murray also mentioned the disruption to his sleep due to the crews working overnight to fix the mains, a necessary but disruptive measure.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of resilient infrastructure and effective communication during crises.
